Justracing is all over what I’d call “false advertising” in the racing industry like a bout of the measles.
As I alluded to here as recently as last week, it is false to advertise something that both the advertiser - and entity advertising it - would reasonably know to be incorrect.
To that end, currently on the Racing Queensland website sits a big banner for Tattsbet, the “home” TAB for all of Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory and now Tasmania. There is no problem with Tattsbet advertising where they like, provided what is said on their banner is 100% accurate and therefore irrefutable. To that end, the current banner at the top of the Racing Queensland website reads “For the best fixed prices more often, go to Tattsbet.com”. So what I thought I’d do is spend some hours and check out the statement that they are making to see if it is accurate, or to see if it is like so many other racing industry advertisements and is what I would call “absolute and utter rot”.
So what I did was line the Tattsbet fixed odds market up with three of their corporate competitors in the fixed odds thoroughbred market arena to see how Tattsbet fared. Do they in fact have “the best fixed prices more often”? I reviewed and recorded the fixed odds markets at two totally different times - 10pm last Friday night and 10am last Saturday morning – which I felt gave all four entities a fair chance and the results are below.
So for this sample below I did the 24 races cumulatively that were being held at Eagle Farm, Rosehill and Flemington last Saturday 7/7/12 and in my survey I noted the fixed odds price of the first two favourites in each of those 24 races, as obviously from a punting perspective the two favourites would have far more relevance to a market comparison between four entities, than comparing say the two biggest roughies from each race. Please note that the top figure next to each horse is the fixed odd price at 10pm Friday night 6/7/12 and the figure underneath it is the same horse’s price at 10am the next day, Saturday 7/7/12. I have also highlighted each Tattsbet price that was the best - at the sampled times.
This is what my research revealed (Please note TATTS = Tattsbet, IAS = International All Sports, B/STAR = Betstar and C/BET = Centrebet):

So from the aforesaid research, I can deduce the following:
1) Re the Brisbane markets Friday night at 10pm, Tattsbet had “the best fixed prices” on only five of the 16 sampled horses (first two favourites in each of the eight races) which equates to Tattsbet having “the best fixed prices” just 31.25% of the time.
2) Re the Brisbane markets Saturday morning at 10am, Tattsbet had “the best fixed prices” on seven of the 16 sampled horses, so 43.75% of the time they had “the best fixed prices”.
3) Re the Rosehill markets Friday night at 10pm, Tattsbet had “the best fixed prices” on two of the 16 sampled horses, which equates to 12.50% of the time.
4) Re the Rosehill markets Saturday morning at 10am, Tattsbet had “the best fixed prices” on three of the 15 sampled horses or 20% of the time, which conversely means that on the other 80% of sampled first and second favourites, they did not have “the best fixed odds prices”. On Saturday morning there were 15 horses, not 16 sampled, as Friday night Rosehill Race 7 second favourite San Zaim was a Saturday morning scratching from that particular race, as he was a dual acceptor for the meeting and started in Race 6.
5) Re the Flemington markets Friday night at 10pm, Tattsbet had “the best fixed prices” on only three of the 16 sampled horses, which translates to them having “the best fixed prices” just 18.75% of the time.
6) Re the Flemington markets Saturday morning at 10am, Tattsbet had the best price on just three of the 16 sampled horses, which means only a disgraceful 18.75% of the time did they in fact have “the best fixed odds price”.
So cumulatively last Friday night at 10pm and last Saturday morning at 10am I compared fixed odds of Tattsbet and three other outlets on two horses in each of 24 races (eight races at each capital city) so 96 prices were compared (24 races x 2 horses x 2 prices) minus no Saturday morning market for Saturday Rosehill scratching San Zaim at four outlets = 92 (96 – 4). Of the 92 prices, Tattsbet was “the best fixed prices” on only 23 (as per the highlighted prices above) of the 92 overall prices, which means that only 25% of the time were Tattsbet proven to be displaying “the best fixed prices” in the marketplace across my more than fair sampled timeslots. And may I respectively suggest that the 25% was probably an embellished figure anyway, as I didn’t even look at the prices of other competitors of theirs like Betfair, other TABs, or other corporates outside of IAS, Betstar and Centrebet, or it is fair to say that the already paltry 25% figure would have been reduced, probably significantly.
So as far as I’m concerned Tattsbet is engaging in what I would call proven “false advertising” by declaring that they offer “the best fixed prices more often” as they clearly don’t. Additionally by Racing Queensland allowing banners like this to be placed on their website, without bothering to check if the contents of that banner are factually correct, they are deemed by me to be nothing more than a “willing party” to all the “false advertising” – and are therefore “guilty by association”.
