Golden Slipper day came and went for another year and I’m sure that given the passage of time most of the starters in the race will be proven to be “totally legless in the general score of things”, so when Overreach won the race at least justice was served, as she was clearly the best performed runner going into the race and there’s no question that she won the world’s richest race for 2YO’s fair and square. There were some awfully slow ones behind the placegetters though – that were going up and down in the one spot for the entire length of the straight and it was amazing that not one horse from back in the field, apart from Fast ‘N’ Rocking, if you are an easy marker, could make any ground in the run to the line. If I get a chance later on in the week I’ll have more to say about the Rosehill day and the, what I’d call woeful “abortion” that unfolded at Moonee Valley that no one in mainstream media has seen yet.
Around the various websites today there is something for everyone. On www.brisbaneracing.com.au you can read about what Philippi’s win did for a young Chilean born stallion last Saturday at Rosehill and you can read the story a harness racing journalist penned which talks of the unhealthy “cone of silence” from Racing Queensland over the delay in naming Boards. From the Doomben betting ring last Saturday, leading rails bookmaker Lindsay Gallagher reported:
Race 1 – Vienna Queen $7.00, Real Rocker $7.00 and Eastern Prince $61.00
There was no money about on course for the opening race winner Vienna Queen and she eased out to $7 at the jump apparently, even though that $7 wasn’t available on course.
There was some money about for Agitate and he was $2.50 into $2.30.
The wet track saw punters tread very warily around these 2YO’s in the opening event.
Race 2 – Tapakeg $41.00, Caellum $3.00 and Gunner Knox $7.50
Roughie Tapakeg won the second race.
There was a little bit of money for Caellum at $3.10 but there was no money of note for anything else in the race, so it finished up a very poor betting race.
Race 3 – Transporter $2.80, Verdasco $3.40 and Dusty Gold $6.50
This winner Transporter eased out to $2.80 at the jump and there was no big money about for him during betting.
Murwillumbah trained Dusty Gold attracted support in the ring around $7 and $8.
This race was another lacklustre betting affair so what we had were plenty of bookies on course but no punters with any cash.
Race 4 – Top Of The Rock $2.20, Pure Purrfection $5.50 and Zamboni $11.00
Top Of The Rock was supposedly $2.50 but the horse was actually layable at $2.10/$2.20. Most certainly $2.50 was not bet in the Brisbane ring, well not for any money anyway.
There was no money about for any other runner away from Top Of The Rock and she’s bred to be a duck and raced accordingly. She stifled the betting and won like an odds-on chance, which she probably should have been.
Race 5 – Seeking More $2.25, Maury $9.00 and Balkuin $4.20
The fifth was won by Seeking More which did a good job to win and he got out to $2.30 late in betting. There was no big money around the ring for him though.
The second horse Maury ran a good race getting home well and might win a race shortly.
There was no money about for the third placed Balkuin which ran his usual honest race.
There was some specking about for a roughie Hayil King Dayl which led. As much as $71 was bet about the horse before he started much shorter.
The best backed runner was the Sunshine Coast trained gelding Kelbenjar at double figure odds, but he never looked likely running ninth of ten, after missing the start, which he can do.
No damage was done on the race even though the short priced favourite Seeking More won.
Race 6 – Dazzle Us $3.80, Magic Ivy $15.00 and Stop Crying $5.50
Dazzle Us made it two Saturday city wins in a row but punters couldn’t warm to him with 59.5kgs so he was out to $4 at the finish and class prevailed in the end.
Clonmacnoise was backed around the ring at $13 but he didn’t do anything.
There wasn’t much money about for Handsome and he was still $4.80 at the jump with little interest.
Last start Gold Coast winner Soul Crusade had some specking, but it was a very poor betting race because the topweight had so much weight on the wet track.
Race 7 – Tokamak $3.60, War Ends $7.00 and Skating On Ice $4.60
You could lay this winner Tokamak and the biggest single bet I laid on him took out $10,000.
I laid War Ends at $6 which was the best price bet in the local ring.
Skating On Ice was only specked and he was out to $4.80 at the jump.
Doubtful Jack was backed at $7.
It was a losing race.
Race 8 – Discreet $3.80, Ring Me Ruby $26.00 and Finnigan’s Folly $19.00
Discreet got out to $4/$4.20 at the finish even though her official SP was only $3.80 and there was no money of note for her.
I laid Gallinari well on the phones at $15.
There was money about for Murwillumbah trained Vis A Tergo.
I laid a large bet on Germayne Lass at $8.
Rare Fragrance was backed on the phones.
So the last race finished up a fair betting race and as I said there was no money for the favourite in the race and it finished up a break-even day overall with disappointing holds in some of the races.
Lindsay will be fielding at Eagle Farm on Wednesday, Ipswich on Friday, Doomben next Saturday and the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
