SAIRYN (“pronounced siren as in police siren”) FAWKE is 22-year-old and he’s apprenticed to Pat Duff at Deagon. Pat Duff, a licenced trainer for about 45 years, has been the master to some of Queensland’s best apprentice jockeys. Names like Mick Dittman, Michael Pelling and Jim Byrne come to mind. The latest apprentice under Duff’s eagle eye to win a Brisbane metropolitan apprentices title was Mandy Radecker in the 2007/2008 season.
To this point of his career Sairyn has ridden 10 winners across six different racetracks. “I’ve ridden a double at both Inverell and Goondiwindi and I’ve also ridden winners at Moree, Texas, Deepwater and Armidale and I’ve won three cup races so far. I won the Inverell Cup on Boxing Day 2012 on Sir Rossa and I also won the Goondiwindi Cup on Check For Freedom and the Texas Cup on Liger”, the young man explained.
Asked what a normal day entails, Sairyn advised, “I start work at 4am and ride a bit of trackwork and that and do stable work afterwards until about 8.30am, before returning to the stables at 3pm and working until 5pm”.
Sairyn has just been licensed in the last fortnight to ride on the provincial circuit and his three rides on the provincial circuit to date have resulted in a fourth at Toowoomba and a second and a fifth at Ipswich. “I’ll try to crack into the Gold Coast actually because I think I’ve improved enough to be successful at the provincials. Down in New South Wales they ride TAB country and everywhere, so it’s pretty much sort of the same as the provincial circuit in Queensland”.
Sairyn can ride at 50 kgs and he can still claim 3 kgs at both country and provincial meetings and he can be contacted for rides on his mobile on 0401 934 949.

JORDAN GROB is 17-year-old and is apprenticed to David Kelly on the Gold Coast. Jordan explains, “I started with David about a year ago and then I moved down to Tamworth for a short time with Sue Grills before moving back to the Gold Coast about two months ago”.
In his career-to-date Jordan has ridden five winners. He’s ridden winners at Tamworth, Armidale, Quirindi, Warialda and Goondiwindi.
Jordan who confesses to having two older brothers who are “quite tall, solid boys, but I’m the skinny one,” doesn’t come from a racing background, but advises he got the idea of becoming a jockey after “going to the races one day with Dad and I just thought I was light enough and I’d like to have a crack at being a jockey”.
Asked what a typical day in his apprenticeship involved, Jordan stated, “I get out of bed about 2.30 in the morning and finish about 8 o’clock. I’m pretty lucky as I don’t have to work afternoons or anything like that”.
Jordan who normally rides “about 10 horses trackwork each morning”, keeps his future ambitions pretty simple at this point of his life, stating, “I’d like to tee up something around Kembla Grange in a few months time and have another go in New South Wales”.
