Champion trainer Darren Weir is one win shy of equalling his Commonwealth record of 348 victories in a season.

After nine winners over the first two days of the Warrnambool carnival, Weir has trained 347 winners in 2016-17.

Weir opened the Warrnambool carnival with four winners with another five on Wednesday.

Last year Weir trained eight winners over the three days.

With bases at Ballarat and Warrnambool, Weir set the ecord last season when he prepared his 348th winner in July, the final month of the season.

Weir has 16 runners spread over nine of the 10 races on the final day at Warrnambool.

High Church is the $3.30 favourite to give Weir his fourth straight victory in the Warrnambool Cup after wins with Akzar (2014), Tall Ship (2015) and Master Of Arts last year.
