Luke Murrell’s McKell Cup preview

The main focus of racing this weekend is in Brisbane for the G1 Kingsford Smith Cup which is ably supported with another 6 Group races. Possibly the unfortunate part of the day could once again be the Eagle Farm track itself, let’s hope it plays fair and everybody gets a chance to perform.

Racing in Sydney returns to Randwick with a slow track and a true rail – which historically means lanes on speed to midfield horses suited but those coming down lanes 3,4,5,6 best suited unless the big fields get them way out wider which I can’t see happening.

The feature Race is the 2400m Listed Mckell Cup over 2400m and it’s a race on paper that has potentially suicide type speed engaged.

Allergic Settles back and stalks them in this and is the class horse of the race. His current price is too short but I think you will get 9/2 on the day and that is an attractive bet.
Beyond Thankful Interestingly has what would be Waller’s first choice jockey here but the issue he hasn’t won coming on 2 years- however I think he is going much better this prep and the speed will help. Never won at trip so that’s also a worry.
Big Blue He was a slow horse in France and is a slow horse here. In saying that he is a genuine 2400m+ plus horse and will like the wet track- however the suicide speed likely and 3rd up says he will need another run.
Slow Pace The old boy is flying if he gets his right conditions but is not suited by the tempo so will surprise if he did something.
Danjeu This horse is also going well and will be suited by the speed- he hasn’t won since Dec 2015 though but the conditions, speed and distance are no worry- a good value chance.
Broadside Is the hot fav and will have plenty of pressure from those around him. The 7 day back up is gold and he was huge the other day. He could easily win by 6 breaking their hearts but I think the pressure and his first run at 2400m makes him a risk at the current $2.50 range.
Soviet courage The jockey booking says he is least favoured as Reith rarely rides for Waller- I reckon this horse is really close to running well but will need one more. If they are trying he will be on speed as this how he races best – He runs the trip and likes the distance but the 21 days and Reith booking suggest he has something else in mind.
My Psychiatrist Jo Pride going through the horrors and this was gone on the turn last time- not going well enough.
Richard of Yorke Gets Kathy and will be on speed. Is a wet tracker so if it dries out its no hope but the 2400m is a tick and the high pressure is tick for it. Winning chance.
Multitude Always ridden on speed and stablemate to the fav. I have it as a a midweek horse only so not good enough.
Lautaro Scratched.
Plot Twist One paced plodder- who needs the jumps- although his one go in high pressure at the right time of his prep he won over this course and distance.Roughie for the first 4 but that’s it.

Overall the winning chances are Allergic, Broadside, Danjeu and Richard of Yorke

Happy to take on Broadside and at the price I’d recommend back DANJEU 1 unit win and 4 units the place now at the $18 win and $4.50 place

Last week we missed and the profit is back to $1175 for the Friday night preview for the year.
