Impressive filly Memes racks up fifth win

Jason Coyle will set his sights higher with impressive filly Memes after she racked up the fifth win of an eye-catching preparation at Randwick.

The three-year-old took nine starts to crack her maiden at the start of this campaign in April and since then has thrived, with two minor placings the only slight blemish on her record.

She blitzed her rivals in Saturday’s Benchmark Handicap (1100m) as in-form apprentice Rachel King, who has been in the saddle for all of Memes’ wins, led from barrier one.

Clipper, the $3.20 favourite, mounted a brief challenge on the straight but Memes ($4.20) cruised to the line to score by three-quarters of a length to impress her Warwick Farm-based trainer.

“I guess you’ve got to start thinking, ‘When do you get serious about some nicer races?'” Coyle admitted.

“She’s had a really good winter and now we probably have to sit down and re-establish where she goes.”

King was confident Memes could handle tougher company.

“She just keeps performing. Every time we ask her to step up she does it again,” she said, praising her versatility.

“She’s getting more and more amenable every start. We’re being able to ride her however we want, really.”

“She’s got a lot of natural speed but she can sit off one if she needs to. She’s happy as long as you get her in a nice rhythm and keep her comfortable.”
