The man who steered champion Black Caviar to most of her wins during her unbeaten career has watched from the sidelines at Geelong as the mare’s first foal claimed a maiden victory.

Luke Nolen had ridden in the second race on Friday and watched as Oscietra raced to a maiden win at her second start in the next race.

Nolen did not ride Black Caviar in her first two wins but rode the champion to 22 of her 25 victories and was also aboard Oscietra when she was third on debut at Flemington in January.

The jockey had to sit out Friday’s 1000m maiden because Oscietra’s 54kg was below his weight range after a recent holiday.

But Nolen said he still got a thrill seeing Oscietra land her first win, with Regan Bayliss steering the three-year-old to a 1-3/4 length success on the synthetic track.

“She’s done her job now. All the pressure’s off,” Nolen said.

“She’s always shown ability. So it was good to see that form at home franked.”

Oscietra’s victory is the next chapter in the Black Caviar story after a famed racing career, with the mare already having had three foals while her fourth is due next month.

“It’s been a pretty good story even without the life beyond her racing career,” Nolen said.

“It’s good to see her first one win. She’s probably the smallest of them all so far, but she’s a winner and she’s city-placed and she’s got a very good pedigree.

“So she’s going to be a very valuable horse beyond her racing career as well.”

Bayliss said Oscietra did everything right in her win and the 20-year-old was thrilled to get the chance to ride her.

Bayliss started his apprenticeship as a teenager with Black Caviar’s trainer Peter Moody, beginning at a time when the champion mare was still in the stable.

“So to ride her foal to her first victory is very special,” Bayliss said.
