Allergic takes next step to Metropolitan

Godolphin stayer Allergic again confronts a thankless task against Winx at Randwick, with James Cummings using the Chelmsford Stakes as preparation for the Metropolitan Handicap.

Allergic started this campaign in the Group Two Warwick Stakes (1400m) at the previous meeting at Randwick, the scene of the Winx’s scary but ultimately triumphant return on August 19.

As usual, Winx is odds-on with Sense Of Occasion ($17) her only rival under $20.

Allergic trailed the Warwick Stakes field, but Cummings is expecting a stronger showing as he steps up in distance towards the Group One Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on September 30.

“We were pleased with how he hit the line,” Cummings said.

“This won’t be any easier, but we look forward to getting him back to handicap class and having him ready for a race like The Metropolitan.

“He’s received the tick of approval for what he’s done so far.”

Allergic’s task has been made even tougher after he drew the outside gate with Tim Clark in the field of 12.

Promising filly Alizee fared better when the barriers were decided for the Group Two Furious Stakes (1200m), where she resumes her rivalry with Formality and Champagne Cuddles.

She has drawn barrier one with Hugh Bowman to ride as she attempts to to avenge her long neck defeat by Formality in the Group Two Silver Shadow Stakes (1900m) on August 19.

“She should be better suited in a slightly bigger field with a better tempo here and with the opportunity to get some cover and get a run off the speed,'” Cummings said.
