Beau Geste wins but Paret one to follow

Godolphin colt Beau Geste continued the promising start to his career by accounting for a quality field of up-and-comers at Rosehill.

The highly touted three-year-old didn’t begin well and settled further nback than expected in the Benchmark 74 Handicap (1300m) but he regained his composure under Brenton Avdulla to claim victory in a close finish.

Beau Geste, the $2.40 favourite, had main rival Paret on his back as they turned for home and unlike the chaser Beau Geste did things right and got the chocolates.

The Chris Waller-trained Paret might just be the one to follow who threw the race away by changing strides several times in the final 200m and running away from his jockey Hugh Bowman.

Bowman was full of praise for Paret when returning to scale telling Waller if he does things right he will be competitive in anything he runs in.

Beau Geste trainer James Cummings was full of priase for his youngster.

“That was a really strong bunch of three years olds,”

“Our race wasn’t really run to suit him , he wanted to overdo things in the early stages.

“Brenton was probably sensing that he had (Paret) behind him and he could hold him safely.

“I’m impressed with the way he was able to knuckle down and get the win,” trainer James Cummings said.

Our Mantra ($18) finished strongly to finish second, a half-neck behind Beau Geste and Paret ($2.50) was a half-neck third.

Cummings was unsure where Beau Geste would head next after his second win in three starts.

“We’ll have a good think about it, one thing I don’t like doing is stepping these horses up in distance too quickly when they’re still learning,” he said.
