Regal Monarch taken to veterinary hospital

Hoping for a dry track at Flemington

Joao Moreira remains with medical staff at Flemington after a fall which has ruled him out of the Melbourne Cup while the horse he was riding has been taken to a Werribee veterinary clinic.

Moreira, who has been replaced by apprentice Ben Allen on the Willie Mullins-trained Irish horse Thomas Hobson, limped back to the jockeys’ room after the incident.

Racing Victoria’s general manager of veterinary services, Grace Forbes, said the Chris Waller-trained Regal Monarch walked onto the transport truck.

“Regal Monarch was immediately attended to by our veterinary team after a fall in the Ronald McDonald House Charities Plate,” Forbes said in a statement.

“He was walked onto the float and has been transported to the University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic in Werribee for further assessment.”
