Flash chasing the Sandown Cash for Laurie

Mornington trainer Matt Laurie is concerned a wet Sandown track won’t give him enough answers about promising three-year-old Flash Cash.

The winner of a Bendigo maiden two starts ago, Flash Cash is set to have his first run on a wet track in Saturday’s Chandler Macleod Handicap.

A trip to the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions Guineas next month is a possibility, but he needs to show Laurie he’s worthy.

“He’s got a fair bit to do for me to go down that path,” Laurie said.

“You’ve got to keep them nominated for those things because you never can tell sometimes.

“It’s a matter of what’s the track like and what you can take out of it, but if he performs below par can you attribute that to the surface.

“That will be the query.”

Flash Cash has raced six times, registering the Bendigo victory and another four placings.

Either side of the Bendigo win he finished second to last-start Ballarat winner Tezlah while in finishing second at Mornington last time, he beat home subsequent Sandown winner Bugari.

“He’s been running well and the form is quite good around him, but he’s a serial placegetter at the moment,” Laurie said.

“He could have gone to a (benchmark) 64, but he’d have to meet these sorts of horses if he wants to go on to something better so it gives us the chance to see where he’s at.”

Laurie has Moonlover contesting the Schweppes Handicap and is content knowing the mare handles all conditions after she finished second on a heavy track at Sandown in August.

“She seems to be a mare that could end up tackling some sort of stakes racing somewhere down the line if she keeps improving,” Laurie said.
