My Song to make debut at Canterbury

Gary Moore is upbeat about the imminent launch of My Song’s racing career, though he has not set his sights too high for the gelding at Canterbury.

He had hoped the three-year-old would already boast the experience of many of his rivals in a Maiden Plate (1100m), but shin soreness and tie-back surgery to aid his breathing prompted a delay.

“He had a setback and he’s just needed time. We’ve got him to the post at last and this is a good starting point for him,” Moore said.

The Rosehill trainer’s long-standing association with part-owners owners Bob Lapointe and David Boehm resulted in him getting to prepare a horse sired by Group One winner Your Song for the first time.

“I like the breed and I think the stallion is going to go really well,” Moore said.

He was confident My Song would run a creditable race on Wednesday but admitted the newcomer would struggle to add to Your Song’s 27 winners.

“Looking at the field, it could be a little too strong for him. He’s running against horses that have been placed,” Moore said.

“He’ll need the run and I think he’ll probably be up to city class over 1400.”

My Song was listed at $26 with the TAB on Tuesday with Godolphin debutante Deft ($3.10) the market leader.

Moore said considering the shin soreness, My Song had made sound progress over the past five months.

“He bailed out of the first trial, he was a lot better in the second and he’s running because he travelled easy and ran third at Rosehill on December 8,” he said.

Moore said barrier one would boost My Song’s hopes of producing a solid start.

“The gate helps the younger ones because they’ve got the rail to follow,” he said.

My Song’s stablemate Auchentoman resumes with a new racing pattern in a Maiden Plate (1000m) at Wyong on Thursday.

“He was dismal ridden on the lead so I had Tim Clark ride him quiet in his last trial. He sat back and finished really strongly. I think he’s got a very good chance,” Moore said.
