Unbeaten filly Charlayne will target a step up in the Group Two Light Fingers Stakes after her commanding victory at Rosehill.

Trainer Chris Waller confirmed black type was on the agenda for the three-year-old after she provided Kerrin McEvoy with a winning return to Saturday racing following a hand injury.

“It’s a big step up but I had a look and there’s not really anything else,” Waller said.

The Light Fingers (1200m) for three-year-olds runs at Randwick in a fortnight.

Waller said Charlayne had benefited from being given scope to mature.

“She’s been held back and good on them. The breeders (Bylong Park) are doing the right thing. They’re not just expecting to win early two-year-old races,” he said.

Charlayne made a winning start to her career at Canterbury last month and negotiated the progression to the 1100m race on her home track with ease.

McEvoy opted for a rails run, setting up Charlayne to beat fellow $3.60 favourite Problem Solver by three-quarters of a length.

Sheikha ($6) was a neck back in third.

“We didn’t really want to step her straight up against the boys on a Saturday but there weren’t any other options,” Waller said.

“Her ability has got her there today. When Kerrin asked she just kept building her momentum. The last 100 metres were very strong.”
