Snowy Clark’s preview & best Flemington

FLEMINGTON Saturday March 17

Rail: Well after last week’s inside bias, 7m should (we hope) a much fairer rail placement than last week’s 4m. Plenty of the Weir v Lindsay Park to content with today

BEST BET: ICONOCLASM Race 2#1

BEST VALUE: HELLOVA STREET Race 5 #3

Race 1: 4-3-7-6

Round 1 Weiry v Lindsay Park, but it’s the latter with HEART THE CHANT well backed to win resuming and maintaining an excellent fresh record up the straight. Not as effective 2nd-up says the card but not ineffective by the same token and looks the one to beat and hold of Weiry’s QUILISTA, back from the Oakleigh Plate. No recent wins but maybe the straight will suit. WRITTEN ERA resumes, won fresh (easier race) last campaign but a distant 3rd pick. SISTER KITTY MAC is speedy and well grounded for another 1200m crack.

SUGGESTED: HEAR THE CHANT beats QUILISTA.

Race 2: 3-7-6-2

Weir bounces back with ICONOCLASM, obviously impressive (8 lens) tells you that in Ararat Maiden) but backed up by sturdy win Adelaide. Got to like its pattern and ability. INDERNILE is the sleeper, never runs badly and always at odds. Ran well behind SCARECROW (who I am slightly opposing here). SWAFFHAM BULBECK is hard to say but horse not hard to like coming to Melbourne. Has talent. MURAAHIB (through Scarecrow race) has obvious credentials.

SUGGESTED: ICONOCLASM gives Weir one back.

Race 3: 5-1-2-8

DEMERARA is short enough for mine. Good fresh win over Holy Blade is terrific form as is 4/6 overall but respecting LIMESTONE and TIME AWAITS and might be better betting options there. FREEZE OVER may go better with a 1100m run in card now, last time she tried that here was very good solo outside rail in race won by booker.

SUGGESTED: At the odds having win bets on 1 ($7) & 2 ($8.5), think the $2.35 short enough DEMERARA.

Race 4: 1-2-6-3

Back to the battle. This one going to Weir with KRONE who was terrific in Listed Cinderella Adelaide at 1050m charging through the line. Has similar profile racing pattern to KHULAASA, but she has the straight track experience, both runs good 2nds. Very tactical as usual these straight races. CRISTAL EYE was very good Ballarat ($17) at 1200m, have to take that dace value – Tin hat form. METRONOME beat SUNDABARANS with better run MV but not convinced that form.

SUGGESTED: Looking for KRONE let unless a no tempo straight race (Which it may be).

Race 5: 3-2-1-4

Looks a race for Weir’s stars TOSEN STARDOM (2nd in Futurity) and HUMIDOR (4th there) and brilliant Makybe Diva winner 1600m here (3rd up) in the spring. Just gambling that the small field plays way of only leader HELLOVA STREET and what a story it would be for Jason Maskiell. Hard and fit and though not as good as the Weir pair, the race may fall its way, that’s the thinking here anyway.

SUGGESTED: HELLOVA STREET at the odds ($8) based on race tempo.

Race 6: 3-4-7-11.

Weir – CULLINGWORTH gets to 2000m 4th run in and has been building nicely. HE EKSCELS has come back in terrific form over trips shorter than you’d think ideal. And this is. A must. ADDISION has been consistent and a threat (and LP). BIG PAT’S PONTIAC gives them starts but continues to race well. But not a race I’m that keen on.

SUGGESTED: CULLINGWORTH (Weir) ready to win.

Race 7: 8-12-7-5

THEANSWERMYFRIEND resumes and profiles well on pace Flemington 1400m though there are a number who will press forward. OVERSHARE is one of those and carries residual fitness though to prove itself at 1st 1400m try. Query is MASK OF FIRE, very good Oz debut in Toorak, best for over longer but 1st full prep here and starts off 1400m. Class player. WYNDSPELLE has no recent wins but good enough to place.

SUGGESTED: Something on THEANSWERMYFRIEND and saver on MASK OF FIRE.

Race 8: 2-3-5-1

It was too bad to be true PORTMAN last week. Apart from the fact most jockeys played silly jockeys and Ben Thompson pulled their joddies down on King’s Command. Said pulled up with slow recovery rate – they always find some excuse like that for a badly beaten favourite. Anyway ignoring that and thinking the real Portman can win. TOP OF THE RANGE was impressive 2nd up at 1600m and hard not to think making Flemington debut same trip will suit. SOHO RUBY is racing well, well placed back from terrific G1 placing. Not dismissing imports on debut NAVAL WARFARE and POW WOW – both in quaddie.

SUGGESTED: PORTMAN’s revenge.

Race 9: 4-10-7-8

Tough but better come home on Weiry with HANDSOME THIEF. Was all over it last start but seemed uncomfortable up the straight. Hopefully has learned from that experience. SACRED SHAM comes to town in form. Like it’s draw. HIGHLAND BEAT (LP) is a straight winner and both runs in have been good. BORD DE GAIN caped off a good campaign with a city win and can continue but other hopes.

SUGGESTED: Staying with HANDSOME THIEF.
