Snowy Clark’s preview & best Day 1 The Bool

Warrnambool Brierley Day 1

BEST BET: TRADESMAN R8 #2

BEST VALUE: GOLD MEDALS R6 #3

Race 1: 2-10-3-4

What better way to start than with Bool stalwart Quinny Scott, almost knocking up 50 consecutive years with a runner and like CLEMMENSEN (at around $12) with a couple of flat BM58 wins either side of sound hurdle trial. TOFFATIN ran well Hamilton and that Strike The Stars form reference is replicated across the maiden hurdles. COUGAR EXPRESS trialled well enough since Oakbank and runs well found favourite – ok. EPSOM HILL can improve off jumps debut.

SUGGESTED: Only horse with recent winning form – CLEMENSON.

Race 2: 10-5-6-2

SURGING WAVE (is a winner over jumps) but in a maiden hurdle! He was just fair at chasing but showed at Pakenham he’s more adept at hurdling – ran into Like A Carousel (a superior flat horse there). IT’S A SILVETRAIL has been well schooled by Weir (he might win a few this week – what was it – 14 last year). Like KOTHU ROTTU Cranbourne trial (won by 7 lens), DOOM ‘N’BOOM has shown something in trials and well tried to win.

SUGGESTED: SURGING WAVE but not favourite race of the day.

Race 3: 6-9-3-10

Not an easy one (is there one at The Bool?) but think Robbie Laing has prepped up JAMIESON ($8) well with 2 trials and gets B McLean. I’m sure as a $325k yearling, they didn’t think a Bool Maiden hurdle was an option but you take what you can. POLICE CAMP has a hurdle 2nd to Weir’s Hale Soriani which is good enough. DANESAI (Weir) trialled ok, STARTIERRA can improve off debut effort.

SUGGESTED: JAMIESON a touch of value.

Race 4: 5-11-12-6

Weir has made this easier taking out two to run only NIGHT FALLS who looks winner now but odds go with that.. FORBID ME NOT is yet to run badly and has a gear change also. IT WILL HAPPEN looms larges as a debutant (Callow on) as does local SCHOOLWORK but they’ll want to be humming to beat NIGHT FALLS.

SUGGESTED:  The Weir quinella.

Race 5: 11-8-6-12

Racing for the VOBIS money here and suspecting the first starters are the key. Liked the trial of STRAVAIN (85k MM yearling) but hard to be conclusive. LIMESHOW one of the query runners. Weir and VOBIS deadly combination. DAME OF THRONES (Lindsay Park = respect), WRITE ENUFF is brother to G2 Danehill winner and Guineas runner-up Rich Enuff – obviously a lovely target debut and well found in pre-betting.

SUGGESTED: Tough at this stage but think STRAVAIN runs well off trial, respect market push/breeding WRITE ENUFF.

Race 6: 3-1-5-6

Today’s feature and obviously ZED EM as the Von Doussa/Great Eastern winner will be hard to beat but looking at some value and GOLD MEDALS has a win over it via the Australian Steeplechase and to me looks well weighted. Like the $9. MONARCH CHIMES the Kiwi hard to beat. NOW AND ZEN (Weir) ready to roll here but deeper race.

SUGGESTED: Value GOLD MEDALS.

Race 7: 9-10-2-8

ROMANESQUE and BIG HAMMER come through the same race to this, the latter since having a hurdle trial which points me his way for Weir over his protégé McLean with the danger. Happy to single that pair out with SUPER HAZE, a winner here and is value for wider players, and SILENT COMMAND next.

SUGGESTED: Back Big Hammer, save the quinella ROMANESQUE.

Race 8: 2-6-3-7

This should win – TRADESMAN – trained by guess who – D K Weir – gee we may be drinking some beer (well we will anyway). Ballarat Cup winner more than adequate at two runs in unsuitable trips. LADY SELKIRK had that ‘be on me at The Bool run’ at Caulfield last time. MONGOLIAN WOLF is a G3 Packer Plate winner fitter for solid return. WOOLSTHORPE STORE will suit Callow of vice versa.

SUGGESTED: Should win TRADESMAN.

Race 9: 4-11-13-2

Weir has given them all a chance by taking out CHOISBORDER but makes race tough. More beer with Weir. THE MAYOR is a fit on pacer. SALLYBROOK won fresh last campaign and resumes here. SWEET PERFUME gets blinkers again now and a hope. RAIZA FLAME respected, SAXAPHONE runs favourite.

SUGGESTED: Very keen CHOISBORDER.

Race 10: 2-16-3-7

DUECOURSE is the one to beat here despite the ominous threat of Weir’s JAWS OF STEEL. They are clear top two. FAVONSKI is handling good long campaign and have to think well prepped for this home town race. PAREMUUS BOY has won 3/8 home track and has good ability.

SUGGESTED:  DUECOURSE top pick ahead of Weir’s favourite.
