Russian Revolution at Newgate

Russian Revolution defeats Redzel.

“He’s absolutely one of the quickest horses we have ever trained,” said leading trainer Peter Snowden in-reference to Russian Revolution retiring to Newgate Farm, as Snitzel’s fastest son now standing at stud.

In winning the prestigious Gr1 Oakleigh Plate of 1100m at Caulfield, Russian Revolution emulated his sire Snitzel in also winning the Oakleigh Plate, and his great grandsire Snippets in also winning The Galaxy-Oakleigh Plate double.

As the $4.60 race favourite Russian Revolution defeated the pace-setting Caulfield Sprint winner Snitty Kitty by a half-neck, with the fast finishing Hellbent, the William Reid Stakes winner in third. The winning time was 1-03.00sec. on a Good 3 track, the raced field included duel Group 1 sprinter Flamberge and former champion juveniles She Will Reign and Catchy.

In being trapped three-wide without cover in the early stages, Russian Revolution was ‘there to be beaten’ in this his second Group 1 victory. “He could have easily done that with the work he did early and midrace but the fact is, he stuck it out and dug deep late,” stated co-trainer Paul Snowden.

At only sixth career start Russian Revolution emulated his great grandsire Snippets in winning the Gr1 The Galaxy 1100m at Rosehill. As a 3yo weighted against older horses he finished over the top of stable-mate Redzel, to win in the last stride, with the $51 outsider Jungle Edge a close third. The winning time was 1-07.6sec on a Heavy 10 track.

Known to be at his best when fresh Russian Revolution was backed into $2.90 favourite for The Galaxy, having trained exceptionally well during the week. ‘He’s been ready to go the last 24 hours, he’s been so full of himself. He threw the rider yesterday, nearly threw her again this morning.’

Retired the winner of 7 of his 12 races and $1.28m in prizemoney, Russian revolution also won the Gr2 Roman Consul Stakes 1200m, Gr2 Ian McEwan Stakes 1000m and Gr3 Vain Stakes 1100m.

Also fourth in Gr1 Doomben 10,000 and Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes, Russian Revolution was unbeaten in both his starts at two-years over 1100m and 1200m at Randwick and Canterbury,

A bay standing 15.3½hh, Russian Revolution was a $320,000 purchase at the 2015 Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Michael Walker Bloodstock for the China Horse Club, from the Vinery Stud draft.

Sire by the record-breaking champion sire Snitzel, who in 2017-18 had the winners of over $29.24m in stakes, including the inaugural The Everest winner Redzel, the triple Group 1 winning 3yo Trapeze Artist and Estijaab, the Golden Slipper winner.

From the stallion family of Encosta De Lago and Flying Spur, Russian Revolution is a half-brother to Group 2 winner Turbo Miss, from the winning American mare Ballet D’Amour, by Stravinsky.

Newly retired Menari also stands at Newgate Farm this season with jockey Josh Parr being full of praise in saying “it’s just phenomenal to ride an animal like this. His turn of foot is second to none.”

Nicknamed ‘Menari the Ferarri’, Michael Wallace of the China Horse Club added in glowing terms “Menari is a machine. He’s got the blood, looks and blinding speed. He’s what Australian breeding is based upon.”

As an impressive winner of the Gr2 Run To The Rose of 1200m in 1:08.59sec. Menari was only 0.05 seconds outside All Our Mob’s 20-year Rosehill track record. He won the listed Rosebud of 1100m at his previous star carrying 60.5kg, 9kg over weight-for-age, in defeating Siege of Quebec and Trekking.

Menari finished his career with a highly rated third placing as $2.50 race-favourite in the Gr1 Golden Rose of 1400m at Rosehill, behind Trapeze Artist and Champagne Cuddles.

The winner of his first start at two-years over 1100m at Randwick, Menari went onto be $1.85 favourite in the Gr3 Canonbury Stakes 1100m when finishing a length second to Pariah. He was the first colt home in the Gr1 Golden Slipper Stakes of 1200m, behind She Will Reign and Frolic.

Menari, as with Russian Revolution, is by the duel Champion Sire in Snitzel, who has sired 82 stakes winners and over $112m is stakes, and is a son of the highly influential Redoubt’s Choice.

From the immediate of Champion Stayer and Older Male in Tie The Knot, Menari is a full-brother to the stakes placed winner Sweet Ava, from the General Nediym stakes winning mare Isurava. In tern Isurava is a full-sister the Group 2 winner Ichihara and stakes winner Au Chocolat.

Newgate Farm says ‘at Newgate we are committed to standing the very best and fastest sons of champion sires. Menani, an incredibly brilliant son of Snitzel, certainly fits that mould.’
