Tony Sears to start new partnership

Leading Toowoomba trainer Tony Sears hopes to have his first runners in a new partnership with his daughter Maddy within a fortnight.

There have been father-daughter training partnerships in other states but it will be the first in the Queensland metropolitan area.

Sears who is a regular in the top 20 trainers in the state is rapidly zeroing in on 1000 career winners since getting a licence nearly 30 years ago.

He has decided it is time to help the next generation of trainers by forming a partnership with Maddy, 22, who has a trainer’s licence in her own right.

Maddy Sears had a runner at Toowoomba on Saturday night but her other runner at Doomben was scratched because of a wide barrier.

Tony Sears said training partnerships were the future for racing.

“Maddy has been around horses her entire life and was a very good show jumper. She has been training some horses in her own right but I thought it was time for her to join me,” he said.

“There is a lot more to training than just horses and I am keen to guide Maddy.

“We just have to complete the last of the paperwork and hopefully that will be the green light to start the partnership.”
