Thornton fined over Baster altercation

Colac trainer Glenn Thornton has been fined following an altercation with retired jockey Stephen Baster at Flemington on the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

Thornton, the father of jockeys Damien, Boris and Stephanie, shoved Baster with an open hand on four occasions near the mounting yard exit following the final race on November 9.

The trainer pleaded guilty to engaging in conduct, or negligence, that could have led to a rules breach.

Taking into account Thornton’s good record over his training career, Racing Victoria stewards fined Thornton $1000 at the conclusion of their inquiry on Monday, of which $500 was suspended for one year.

Baster retired from race riding at Sandown on November 16 after partnering Gold Fields to victory in his final ride.
