Buffalo River and Run Harry Run line up in the Kevin Heffernan Stakes

The Mike Moroney and Glen Thompson stable is set to return to Caulfield in search of a Stakes race victory with two horses looking to rebound of disappointing last start efforts.

Buffalo River and Run Harry Run line up in the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1400m) on Saturday, with both horses dropping back from the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over the same course and distance on November 16.

Run Hurry Run finished four places behind his stablemate in 13th place on that occasion, but Thompson said there were excuses for both horses that day.

“Things didn’t really work out for either of them the other day,” Thompson said.

“Buffalo had a very tough run, he was caught wide, so it was just a waste of time really, and it’s just best to forget he went around.

“Run Harry Run’s run, he just went too hard into that headwind, so it was a bit of a disaster for both of them.

“They’ve come through the run well, so we’ll head off to Caulfield again.”

Prior to their last start performances, both horses had been showing signs they were about to strike winning form.

Buffalo River appreciated the soft ground when second in the Moonga Stakes over Saturday’s course and distance on October 19.

Those conditions are expected again on Saturday with rain forecast during the day.

Run Harry Run ran second in the Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 12, before finishing third at Moonee Valley over 1500m in the lead up to the Sir Rupert Clarke.

Saturday’s race carries a win-and-you’re-in bonus into the $1 million Supernova (1400m) at Pakenham on December 21, the second of two slot races introduced by Southside Racing, the merged entity of the Cranbourne Turf Club and the Pakenham Racing Club.

“The Supernova, it would be a good race for either of them, so we’ll see how we go on Saturday and then hopefully aim towards that,” Thompson said.
