Trainer Charlotte Littlefield is preparing for a Group 1 challenge at Moonee Valley, but before that, she had a little ‘nerve settler’ at Sandown.
Littlefield will saddle She’s Bulletproof in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on Saturday, hoping to bounce back from a heartbreaking second-place finish in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield last month.
While She’s Bulletproof remains Littlefield’s best performer, The Muffin Man’s victory in the Sportsbet Racing Form Plate (1400m) at Sandown on Wednesday suggests the gelding has a promising future.
Racing in the same colours as reigning Horse of the Year Pride Of Jenni, The Muffin Man showed strong fight, despite the race being a maiden.
Sent out as the $1.50 favourite, The Muffin Man secured a three-quarter length win under Ethan Brown, holding off Sumo Sandy ($6.50) and Puglia ($3.50).
Littlefield was never entirely comfortable with how the gelding behaved before the race, but was impressed by his resilience.
“He’s such a ‘goofball’ and still so raw,” she said. “But to his credit, he dug deep and showed the qualities of a good horse.”
