Nash Rawiller closes gap on James McDonald in Sydney premiership race

A treble at Randwick for Nash Rawiller has him within striking distance of claiming his fourth Sydney metropolitan riders’ premiership while a return date for table topper James Mcdonald is yet to be confirmed.

While McDonald has been sidelined for most the past month through illness, Rawiller has clawed back the gap to be sitting three wins shy of McDonald’s tally of 109 wins.

Rawiller capped the day steering the South Of India ($4.20) to the outside rail in the home running and a fifth-straight win for the three-year-old gelding in the final event of the day, the Schweizer Kobras Lawyers Handicap (1000m).

His first winner of the day was in the third race, the TAB Highway Plate (1600m) aboard the well-fancied Cranky Harry ($1.80 bookmakers favourite), with Ha Ha Ha ($6.50) providing his second in the Elite Sand and Soil Handicap (1600m).

Five race meetings remain in Sydney’s metropolitan scene towards the season ending on July 31.

According to Racing and Sports, Rawiller is riding at a winning strike-rate of approximately 20% for season 2023/24.
